MetroVancouver Update: Construction Complete on the Iona Causeway Improvements

On behalf of the Iona Projects we’d like let you know the news that construction is complete along the Iona Island Causeway!

Causeway Improvements

The Causeway Improvements began in spring 2025 and were part of the early work for the Iona Island Wastewater Treatment Plant Projects. The conversion of single-lane traffic into separate lanes for accessing Iona Beach Regional Park, the treatment plant, and the Iona Projects construction site will better support safer and more efficient access for all users during future phases of the projects.

The improvements include:

  • Upgrades to several underground utilities that will support construction of the Iona Island Wastewater Treatment Plant upgrades

  • Transportation safety improvements for all users, including widening the lanes, adding a construction vehicle queue lane, and cycling shoulders on both sides of the road

  • A newly landscaped boulevard

  • Construction of a greenway for pedestrians and recreational cycling

These improvements were funded by two-thirds contributions from Canada and the Province of BC, along with an additional $500,000 BC Active Transportation Grant from the Province of BC.

Thank you for your patience as we completed these important infrastructure upgrades. Please visit metrovancouver.org/iona to learn more about the Iona Projects and/or to sign up for the project e-newsletter.
