YVR Update: Upcoming trail closures - Sea Island Conservation Area (East)
We are reaching out to the Sea Island Community Association and residents to let you know that as part of our Sea Island Climate Resilience Project, YVR will be moving ahead with dike and drainage construction beginning the week of February 9.
This work is part of our greater Sea Island Flood Protection Program, as we continue to invest in our infrastructure to anticipate long-term changes. The upgrades to the dikes and drainage systems across Sea Island, including around Sea Island Conservation Area East, provide a proactive solution to address climate-related challenges, including enhanced flood protection, mitigation of risks of land loss due to geotechnical instability, maintained wildlife habitat, and enhanced recreational area.
Beginning the week of February 9, a portion of the east conservation area, east of McDonald Beach Park, including a walking trail, will be temporarily closed to ensure the safety of our community and workers as dike and drainage work takes place. Following the completion of work, habitat restoration efforts will ensure ecosystem health is maintained. The area is expected to reopen once construction is completed in summer 2027.
YVR is carefully planning and staging our work to minimize the overall project duration, however the exact duration of the work is dependent on several factors, including weather conditions.
We recognize the temporary closure of the East trail and surrounding area during the upgrade work in 2026 and 2027 will be challenging for some trail users. Information on nearby trails and alternative access to beach areas along the Fraser River can be found here.
We urge trail users to obey posted signage for their safety.
Let us know if you have any questions about the trail closure. All project updates will be shared on our newsroom, news.yvr.ca
